Change your life with a brass instrument!

The Christchurch School of Music is one of New Zealand’s greatest musical treasures, and we’re on the hunt for some new brass students – no matter your age or experience! We are taking 2023 enrolments now. Is it time to change yours or your child’s life with music in 2023?

Brass Instruments: The loudest and proudest!

If you think the brass family got its name because the instruments are made of brass, you’re right! This family of instruments can play louder than any other in the orchestra and can also be heard from far away. This makes them really fun to learn and jam along with other brass instrument players for a cool effect!

8 Reasons Why You Should Learn a brass instrument

1) They are shiny.

2) They make a beautiful sound.

3) You can be in cool brass bands.

Those are already more than enough reasons, but just in case anybody isn’t convinced yet, here are some more…

@alesssos Our goal is STILL to include brass in every song (even if it already has it) #frenchhorns #brassbandmusic #brasstracks #brass #industrybaby #trumpets ♬ original sound - Steven Alesso

Easy to learn

OK, all musical instruments take a lot of practice but, as instruments go, brass are not too hard!

You Can Sound good pretty quickly

The hardest bit is learning to vary the pitch using your lips (or embouchure, or chops, as we say in the trade). Once you can do that you are off! This means that unlike, say, violin-players, beginners on brass can sound pretty good pretty quickly.

Good for any age

It’s never too late. You can take up brass at any age with ease! Our school takes students from ages 3-300!

versatility

Brass instruments are very versatile. You find them in orchestral music, jazz and wind bands, rock bands, hip hop & rap acts, as well as – of course – brass bands.

Why stop at one?

Once you can play one brass band instrument you can pretty much play the lot. How cool is that? The fingering is the same for all of them and the slide positions on the trombone equate to valve combinations on the valved instruments (are you still following?) so the only thing you have to adapt to is a different sized mouthpiece.

affordability

As instruments go, brass are not too expensive. There’s not much that can go wrong with them either. No faffing about with reeds or worrying about breaking a string. Just don’t drop them!

good for your health

There are proven physical and mental health benefits from making music with other people. In a brass band you all have to coordinate your breathing and you need to breathe in properly. This is very good for you.

brass sparks joy

And finally… you will bring joy to other people. Whether it’s playing at your friend’s wedding, a summer bandstand concert in the park, a jolly marching parade, a YouTube video or Christmas carol busking – brass instruments and Christmas music were made for each other – everybody loves the sound of a brass band.

About The Christchurch School of Music

Tens of thousands of Christchurch children and adults have learned to love and appreciate music at CSM. CSM is a place where the whole family can learn music in the same place at the same time! We also offer a wide range of orchestras, ensembles and performing groups for all ages and abilities.

CSM is a not-for-profit organisation with a strong focus on community. On a Saturday morning the whole family can find something musical to match their interests and abilities. Preschool children can begin their musical journey by joining in our experiential “Take Off with Music” while older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice). Those who already play are welcome to join in one of our fabulous ensembles or choirs. If Saturdays aren’t an option for you or your family, CSM also offers a range of weekday opportunities for learning and playing music.

The variety at CSM is not limited to the selection of instruments and teachers, but includes a wide range of musical styles. For those with an interest in classical music our graded orchestras are the perfect choice. The family oriented concert band plays a vast selection including classical, show tunes, folk music and popular songs that everyone will recognise. Explore our website further to fi

“A great Christchurch institution. Well organised and a wonderful place to learn to play an instrument at any age. I wouldn’t be as passionate about music without the outstanding support, teaching and joy that CSM provides!
